Why do puppies chew on everything?

Updated: Dec 22, 2023

It’s normal for puppies and dogs to chew on objects as they explore the world. Chewing accomplishes a number of things for a dog. For young dogs, it’s a way to relieve pain that might be caused by the incoming teeth. For older dogs, it’s nature’s way of keeping jaws strong and teeth clean. Chewing also combats boredom and can relieve mild anxiety or frustration.

How to avoid chewing of household objects?

  1. Give your dog toys that are clearly distinguishable from household goods.

  2. Supervise your dog until they learn the house's rules.

  3. Give your puppy plenty of people-time.

  4. Give your puppy plenty of physical and mental exercise.

  5. Build a toy obsession in your dog.
